Vung Temple Festival, Do SOn

Unique Belief in Worshiping the Mother Goddess

The Vung Temple Festival not only honors the Mother Goddess but also provides an opportunity for the community and visitors to engage in distinctive traditional cultural activities. If you love exploring folk culture, this is definitely a destination you cannot miss.

Introduction to Vung Temple

Vung Temple, also known as Mieu Vung, has the honorary name Nhan Tho Linh Tu. The temple was built on a mulberry field near the river mouth leading to the sea. Today, it is located in Dong Tien Residential Area, Hai Son Ward, Do Son District.

The temple was constructed during the late Le Trung Hung period, around 1700–1775. In 1929, the Nguyen Dynasty conferred a title upon it with four characters: “Trí – Nghĩa – Khôn – Nguyên” (Wisdom – Righteousness – Integrity – Origin) and renovated it in the shape of the Đinh character (丁).

Over time, war and natural disasters have left only a few precious relics, such as bronze incense burners, porcelain incense burners, and a bronze bell from the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1990, the temple donated an ancient bronze statue of Amitābha Buddha to Thap Pagoda.

Legend of Vung Temple

According to legend, on a stormy night, three decayed wooden logs drifted against the current from the sea to the mulberry wharf. Unexpectedly, they sprouted and bloomed with vibrant red flowers, illuminating a corner of the river. At that time, an official who had no son received a divine dream, guiding him to the mulberry field to build a shrine and pray for a child. Miraculously, within that year, he had a son.

The deity revealed herself and declared her sacred title as Đệ Nhất Thiên Tiên Liễu Hạnh Công Chúa (First Heavenly Immortal Princess Liễu Hạnh). From then on, the people built a shrine to worship her.

The three drifting logs eventually grew into giant ancient trees. In 1986, a storm knocked down the sacred freshwater mangrove, leaving only 13 branches on the old stump. These branches later grew into beautiful trees, which now stand in front of the temple.
