History and Significance of Hang Pagoda

Ancient poems and folk songs have praised Hang Pagoda:

"Hang Pagoda, Buddha Cave, Bat Cave

Nowhere compares in all directions;"

"Hang Pagoda, a miraculous Buddhist site

Was it built by Buddha or crafted by fairies?"

Hang Pagoda, also known as Coc Tu, has a history spanning over 2,000 years. It is one of the oldest pagodas in Do Son, Hai Phong.

The pagoda was built before the Common Era by a monk from Tianzhu (ancient India). This monk also constructed a pagoda on Mau Son (Choi Mong Mountain) and later passed away at Hang Pagoda. Many researchers believe this was the first place where Buddhism entered Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in the nation's spiritual and cultural history.

Architectural Beauty of Hang Pagoda

Hang Pagoda in Do Son boasts a unique architecture that harmoniously blends nature with spirituality.

The ancient pagoda was originally situated within a natural rock cave on a mountainside, standing 35 meters tall and 7 meters wide. Its trapezoidal structure extends 25 meters deep into the mountain. The deepest part of the pagoda is only 1.2 meters high and 1.3 meters wide. Notably, the pagoda is nestled against the mountain, facing the vast Do Son sea, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

After several renovations, the pagoda has been reconstructed with three levels, featuring the Tam Bao Hall on the second floor and the Tay Phuong Sanctuary on the top level. The traditional wooden and ceramic architecture of the Ancestors' House and the Mother’s House stands out, showcasing decorative art from the late 20th century.

Outside the pagoda, a solemn statue of Guan Yin (Avalokiteshvara) Buddha graces the space. Nearby stands a seven-story pagoda tower symbolizing the seven patriarch monks who practiced here. Along the pagoda’s facade are statues of Arhats in various poses and expressions, adding to its spiritual charm.
